Q1 stratified sampling

A college has 2,400 students, and 15% study psychology. A researcher wants a stratified sample of 200 students that reflects this proportion. How many psychology students should be selected?

  1. 30
  2. 36
  3. 150
  4. 360
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. 15% of 200 is 0.15 × 200 = 30. Stratified sampling represents each relevant subgroup in proportion to the population.

Q2 matched pairs design

Which is a key advantage of a matched pairs design over an independent groups design?

  1. The same person must complete both conditions.
  2. Participant variables may be reduced by matching participants on relevant characteristics.
  3. Order effects are impossible.
  4. It always requires fewer participants than every other design.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. Matching participants on relevant characteristics can reduce participant-variable differences between conditions. It does not eliminate all confounds or guarantee a smaller sample.
