Q1 Process explanation

Explain how nutrient cycling can be rapid in a tropical rainforest despite heavily leached soils.

Show a model answer

Model answer. Warm, wet conditions cause rapid decomposition, releasing nutrients quickly from dead material. Most nutrients are taken up rapidly by dense vegetation and stored in biomass, so little remains in the soil; heavy rainfall can leach soluble nutrients downward.
