GUIDE

About the Korean CSAT: Social & Science Inquiry (17 subjects) exam and how to study with examplat

About the Inquiry (탐구) section of the CSAT

The College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT, Suneung) is the national university entrance exam in South Korea, administered by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). In the Inquiry (탐구) section, candidates choose up to two subjects from 17 electives in social studies and science. Each subject has 20 five-choice questions and a 30-minute time limit, and results are reported as standard scores and percentiles. The 17 subjects are Life and Ethics, Ethics and Thought, Korean Geography, World Geography, East Asian History, World History, Politics and Law, Society and Culture, Economics, Physics I and II, Chemistry I and II, Life Science I and II, and Earth Science I and II.

The questions are written in Korean and often give a short passage, a table or a dialogue, then ask which statement is correct. Check KICE's website for the current exam format, dates and scoring.

How to study the question types

Most questions are solved by applying a concept to the data in front of you, not by recalling a definition. Read the given passage or table first, mark what each speaker or each column claims, and then check each of the five choices against it one by one.

In statement-selection questions, eliminate the choices that contradict the data, then compare the rest for what is actually stated rather than what is generally true about the topic.

How to use examplat for the CSAT Inquiry subjects

examplat holds more than 1,000 original five-choice practice questions written in Korean, about 60 for each of the 17 subjects, based on the 2015 revised national curriculum. Each question has an explanation and links to sources from Korean government institutions such as the Ministry of Education. Choose a subject, practise in short sessions, and review the wrong answers together.

The screen text is in English or Japanese, but the questions and explanations are in Korean. examplat covers multiple-choice practice only, with no study notes or interactive figures, and the number of questions per subject is smaller than a full question bank for one subject. Use your textbook and KICE's official materials alongside it.
