GUIDE
About the Korean CSAT: Korean History exam and how to study with examplat
About the Korean History section of the CSAT
The College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT, Suneung) is the national university entrance exam in South Korea, administered by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). Korean History is a required section for all test takers. It is graded on an absolute scale from grade 1 to 9, rather than on a ranking, and the questions are multiple-choice.
The questions cover Korean history from the ancient states through Goryeo and Joseon to the modern and contemporary periods, including the colonial period, liberation and the Republic of Korea. Many questions give a source or a short description and ask you to identify the period, the person or the cause. Check KICE's website for the current exam format, dates and scoring.
How to study the question types
Build a timeline first. Many questions are solved by placing an event or source in the right period and then recalling what was happening before and after it. Link events by cause and effect so that a question that shows only a clue still points to the right answer.
In five-choice questions, eliminate options from the wrong period first. Then compare the remaining options for what the source actually says, not for what is generally true about the period.
How to use examplat for Korean History
examplat holds about 1,000 original five-choice practice questions in English, organised by period, each with an explanation and links to sources from Korean government institutions such as the National Institute of Korean History and KICE.
The questions are written in English, so the real exam's Korean wording is not reproduced. Use your textbook and KICE's official materials alongside it. examplat covers multiple-choice practice only, with no study notes.
