GUIDE
About the AP US History exam and how to study with examplat
About AP United States History
AP United States History (APUSH) is a College Board Advanced Placement course and exam covering American history from about 1491 to the present. The course is organised into nine historical periods, from the contact between Native American, European and African societies to the United States since 1980. It also builds historical thinking skills: analysing primary and secondary sources, making historical comparisons, understanding causation, continuity and change, and building an argument supported by evidence.
The exam is held once a year in May and is scored from 1 to 5. It has multiple-choice and short-answer questions, a document-based question and a long essay. Many universities grant credit or placement for qualifying scores, but each university sets its own policy. Check the College Board website for the current exam format, dates and score reporting.
How to study the question types
Multiple-choice questions usually start from a short source or a statement and ask you to identify a cause, an effect, a comparison or a change over time. Read the source first, note who created it, when and why, and then choose the answer that the source supports, not simply one that is true.
Build a timeline for each period and connect developments across periods. Questions often test whether you can place an event in its period and explain how it relates to earlier and later developments, such as the expansion of voting rights, migration, or the changing role of the federal government.
How to use examplat for AP United States History
examplat holds more than 1,000 original multiple-choice questions organised by the course's nine periods, each with an explanation and links to the College Board course and exam description and to the primary-source collections behind the question. Choose a period, practise in short sessions, and review the wrong answers by period.
examplat covers multiple-choice practice only: it does not mark short-answer, document-based or long essay responses, and it has no study notes or interactive figures for this exam. Use your textbook, class notes and the free-response materials published by the College Board alongside it.
