Which statement best explains why a society's holiday meal customs count as culture rather than as a biological trait?
Culture is learned, shared and handed on by a society, so holiday meal customs are cultural rather than inherited biologically.
Why each option is right or wrong
- Climate influences available foods but does not fix customs; this slides toward environmental determinism.
- Governments can shape some practices, but holiday customs are mostly transmitted informally through families and communities.
- Density can affect settlement and services, but it does not create or explain a society's meal customs.
- Meal customs are learned behaviors, not genes; this confuses cultural transmission with biological inheritance.
- Customs that are taught and shared and then passed on are what geographers mean by culture, so this fits.

About AP Human Geography
AP Human Geography is a College Board course and exam about the patterns and processes that shape how people use and change the Earth's surface. The seven units are thinking geographically; population and migration; cultural patterns; political patterns; agriculture and rural land use; cities and urban land use; and industrial and economic development. The exam is held each May and is scored 1 to 5.
The exam has a 60-minute multiple-choice section with 60 questions and a free-response section with three questions. Check AP Central for the current course and exam description, exam dates and scoring.
How to study the question types
Name the scale first: many questions turn on whether a pattern is local, national or global. Then match the scenario to the course concept, model or theory, and ask what the model leaves out, since several questions test the limits of a model as much as the model itself.
For data and map descriptions, read the labels and the units before the numbers, and check whether the question asks for a pattern, a cause or a consequence. Many wrong choices describe a real concept that answers a different question.
How to use examplat for AP Human Geography
examplat holds more than 1,000 original five-choice questions organised by the units and topics of the course and exam description. Each question has an explanation for every choice, three hints and a link to the primary source behind it, such as the course and exam description, United Nations, FAO, U.S. Census Bureau or World Bank pages. Choose a unit, practise in short sessions, and review the wrong answers together.
examplat covers multiple-choice practice only: it does not mark free-response answers, and it has no study notes or interactive figures for this exam. Use your textbook and the free-response questions released by the College Board alongside it.
