What happens when a protein enzyme is denatured?
Denaturation disrupts the protein’s higher-order structure, changing the shape of its active site. The amino-acid sequence and peptide bonds usually remain intact.
Why each option is right or wrong
- Correct. Denaturation disrupts the enzyme’s higher-order structure, changing the active-site shape and often reducing substrate binding. Peptide bonds and the primary sequence usually remain intact.
- Incorrect. This confuses denaturation with hydrolysis. Denaturation changes folding; hydrolysis breaks peptide links to form amino acids.
- Incorrect. Denaturation does not normally rearrange the covalent amino-acid sequence; it alters higher-order folding.
- Incorrect. Denaturation disrupts stabilising interactions and makes the protein less ordered, rather than stabilising its tertiary structure.

GUIDE
About the A-level Chemistry (AQA) exam and how to study with examplat

About AQA A-level Chemistry (7405)
AQA A-level Chemistry (7405) is a two-year qualification taken mainly in England and Wales. The content is divided into physical chemistry (3.1), inorganic chemistry (3.2) and organic chemistry (3.3), from atomic structure, bonding and energetics to acids and bases, transition metals, reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy and organic synthesis. Practical skills are assessed through required practical activities and written questions about practical work.
It is assessed through three written papers, each 2 hours, and graded from A* to E. Paper 1 focuses on inorganic and relevant physical chemistry, Paper 2 on organic and relevant physical chemistry, and Paper 3 covers any content and practical skills, and includes multiple-choice questions. Check AQA's website for the current specification, exam dates and data booklet.
How to study the question types
Show the working in calculations: moles, concentrations, rate constants, equilibrium constants and pH all reward clear units and sensible significant figures. A common slip is forgetting to convert cm³ to dm³ or kJ to J, so check the units before you check the arithmetic.
For organic chemistry, learn each reaction as reagent, conditions, mechanism and product, then practise linking them into routes. For trends, explain the reason in terms of structure, such as nuclear charge, shielding, bond strength or intermolecular forces, and avoid simply describing the trend.
How to use examplat for A-level Chemistry
examplat holds 1,000 original multiple-choice questions organised by the sections of the AQA specification, each with a reason for every option, three hints and links to the sources behind it. Choose a section, practise in short sessions, and review the wrong answers together.
The real papers are mostly written, so multiple-choice practice is a study format: it checks precise terms, data reading and calculations, but it does not mark written or extended answers, and it has no study notes or interactive figures for this exam. Use your textbook, class notes and the past papers and mark schemes published by AQA alongside it.
