You are writing to a district nurse about Mr Alan Pryce, who needs his leg wound dressed every second day after discharge. Which is the best opening sentence for the letter?
A letter to a community nurse should begin with the reason for writing and the action requested. The first option does both.
Why each option is right or wrong
- Correct. It states the purpose and the request in the first sentence, so the reader knows immediately what to do.
- Incorrect. This describes the patient vaguely and does not say why the letter is being sent.
- Incorrect. This is polite but contains no information about the patient or the request.
- Incorrect. This is too vague, because it does not tell the reader the purpose or action required.

About OET Nursing
The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test for healthcare professionals, and the nursing version is widely used by nurses who want to register in English-speaking countries. It has four parts: Listening and Reading are shared by all professions, while Writing and Speaking use nursing tasks. Writing asks you to read case notes and write a letter, such as a referral or discharge letter; Speaking is two role-plays in which you talk with a patient or relative. The test is offered on paper, on computer and at home (OET@Home). Check the test provider for dates, fees and results rules.
Required grades are set by each regulator. For example, the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) asks for B in Listening, Reading and Speaking and C+ in Writing on the nursing test, and allows results from two sittings to be combined under set conditions. Always check the regulator's own page before you book.
Where nurses lose marks in Writing and Speaking
In Writing, the hardest part is choosing information. A letter that copies every line of the case notes is too long and hides the request, but leaving out a key fact such as a medication change or a fall risk also weakens it. Start with the purpose of the letter, keep only what this reader needs, and write in complete sentences rather than note form. In Speaking, the conversation matters as much as the language: introduce yourself, find out what the patient already knows and fears, explain in small plain-English pieces, and check understanding before you close.
How to use examplat for OET Nursing
examplat has 30 fictional nursing case cards for letter writing and 30 role-play cards, written by examplat and checked against public NHS, NICE and BNF guidance. Write a letter and the AI shows which essential information you missed, what you included that the reader does not need, and any facts copied wrongly, with notes on purpose, conciseness, tone, layout and language. In role-plays the AI plays the patient with a synthesised voice, and you get feedback on language and on clinical communication, task by task. A short drill bank covers workplace texts and letter language. AI feedback is a practice estimate, not a test result. examplat is an independent practice service and is not connected with the test provider; OET is a trademark of Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment.
