Clear study notes

About the JFT-Basic exam and how to study with examplat

About the JFT-Basic
The JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) is a computer-based test of the everyday Japanese you need to live and work in Japan. It is run by the Japan Foundation and is used as a Japanese-language test for the Specified Skilled Worker (i) status of residence. You book a date at a test centre in your country, and the test is held throughout the year.
The test has 4 sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension, with about 50 questions in 60 minutes. Your result is a score and a level. The format and levels can change, so check the Japan Foundation's JFT-Basic website for the latest information before you book.
How the questions on examplat work
The questions are written in Japanese, as in the test, with furigana (small kana readings) over the kanji. You can turn furigana off when you are ready. The explanations and the three-step hints are in English and Indonesian. They are AI translations of explanations we wrote in Japanese.
Each question has a level guide: A1, A2.1 or A2.2. This is only a guide for practice. Your real result is decided by the score the Japan Foundation gives you in the test.
Listening
Listening questions are still in preparation. When they are ready, they will use synthetic (computer-generated) voices, which are different from the voices in the real test. Until then, examplat covers the other three sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, and Reading Comprehension.
How to study with examplat
Start with the 3 free questions to see the level. Then practise one section at a time in short daily sessions on your phone. Wrong answers and questions you answered with hints are saved, so you can re-solve them and spend your time on your weakest section.
