In an essay advocating careful revision, a writer says, “A first draft is a map sketched in pencil; revision is the act of adding roads after learning where readers get lost.” What is the main effect of this comparison?
The map metaphor frames revision as adding guidance where readers need it. It conveys a constructive, reader-centered purpose rather than simply labeling drafts as wrong.

GUIDE
About the AP English Language exam and how to study with examplat
About AP English Language and Composition
AP English Language and Composition is a College Board Advanced Placement course and exam that develops skills in reading and writing nonfiction. The course is organised into nine units around rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organisation, and style. Students analyse how writers make choices for an audience and purpose, and write arguments supported by evidence.
The exam is held once a year in May and is scored from 1 to 5. It has a multiple-choice section on passages and a free-response section with a synthesis essay, a rhetorical analysis essay and an argument essay. Many universities grant credit or placement for qualifying scores, but each university sets its own policy. Check the College Board website for the current format, dates and score reporting.
How to study the question types
For multiple-choice questions, read the passage once for the writer's purpose and audience, then answer by pointing to words in the text. Wrong options often describe something true about the topic but not what the writer is doing. Ask what the sentence or paragraph does, not just what it says.
For the essays, practise a clear defensible thesis, evidence chosen from the sources or from your own knowledge, and commentary that explains how the evidence supports your line of reasoning. Writing under time, then comparing your answer with a model, is more useful than reading models alone.
How to use examplat for AP English Language
examplat holds about 1,000 original practice questions: multiple-choice questions on short passages, organised by the course units, and a few essay prompts with model answers and a marking guide. Each question has an explanation and links to the College Board course and exam description.
For the essay prompts you type your answer and examplat gives an automatic score as a guide. It is not a human mark and it cannot judge the quality of an argument, so use it only to check that you covered the points in the model answer. Use your teacher or the College Board's scoring guidelines for real feedback.
