GUIDE
About the AP Precalculus exam and how to study with examplat
About AP Precalculus
AP Precalculus is a College Board Advanced Placement course that prepares students for calculus and other university mathematics. It focuses on functions and how they model change: polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and polar functions. A further unit on functions involving parameters, vectors and matrices is available to schools but is not part of the AP Exam.
The exam is held once a year in May and is scored from 1 to 5. It has multiple-choice and free-response sections, and some parts require a graphing calculator. Many universities grant credit or placement for qualifying scores, but each university sets its own policy. Check the College Board website for the current format, calculator rules and dates.
How to study the question types
Many questions ask you to move between representations: an equation, a table, a graph and a verbal description. Practise describing a function's behaviour in words (rate of change, end behaviour, concavity, asymptotes) and connecting that to a formula.
Show the structure of your reasoning even when only the final choice is marked. Work out what each wrong option would have come from, such as a sign error or a mixed-up inverse, so that you learn to spot that mistake in your own work.
How to use examplat for AP Precalculus
examplat holds more than 700 original multiple-choice questions organised by course unit, each with a worked explanation and links to the College Board course and exam description. Choose a unit, practise in short sessions and review the wrong answers together.
examplat covers multiple-choice practice only: it does not mark free-response answers, and it has no study notes or interactive figures for this exam. Use your textbook and the College Board's materials alongside it.
