IELTS Reading True / False / Not Given 푸는 법과 연습 문제
True / False / Not Given은 각 문장이 지문의 사실과 일치하는지를 묻습니다. 점수를 잃는 경우의 대부분은 False와 Not Given을 혼동해서입니다. 풀이 방법, 피해야 할 함정, 직접 풀어 볼 1문제를 소개합니다.
각 문장이 지문의 정보와 일치하는지(True), 반대되는지(False), 지문에 나오지 않는지(Not Given)를 판단합니다. 함정은 Not Given입니다. 지문에 해당 내용이 없으면, 그럴듯해 보이는 문장이라도 답은 Not Given입니다.

푸는 방법
- 먼저 문장을 읽고 핵심 내용과 all, only, always, first, most 같은 범위를 한정하는 단어에 밑줄을 긋습니다.
- 지문에서 같은 내용을 다루는 부분을 찾습니다. 문장은 지문의 순서를 따릅니다.
- 단어가 아니라 의미를 비교합니다. 지문은 보통 문장을 바꾸어 표현합니다.
- 지문이 같은 내용을 말하면 TRUE, 반대 내용을 말하면 FALSE, 어느 쪽으로도 말하지 않으면 NOT GIVEN을 고릅니다.
자주 하는 실수
- 지문이 그 내용을 언급하지 않았을 뿐인데 FALSE를 고르는 것. FALSE가 되려면 분명한 모순이 있어야 합니다.
- 자신의 지식으로 답하는 것. 현실에서 맞는 내용이라도 지문에 쓰인 내용만 근거가 됩니다.
- usually와 always, some과 most처럼 주장을 바꾸는 단어 하나를 놓치는 것.

The Glassmakers of Vellin The village of Vellin has a glassmaking tradition that dates back at least four hundred years. Its early glassmakers were attracted to the area by its forests, which supplied wood to fuel the furnaces, and by a nearby river, which was used to transport finished goods to the coast. By the nineteenth century, most of the surrounding forest had been cut down, and the workshops began burning coal brought in by canal. Today, only two workshops remain, both run by families who have worked with glass for generations. They no longer produce everyday items such as bottles and windows, which are made far more cheaply in large factories, but specialise in decorative pieces sold to collectors and tourists. Each piece is blown and shaped by hand, and a large bowl may take a full day to complete. A small museum in the village displays examples of Vellin glass from different periods, together with tools used by the early glassmakers.
Does the following statement agree with the information given in the passage? Choose TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN. Glass is made by heating sand to a very high temperature.

- Not correct. This may be true in real life, but the passage does not say it, and in IELTS only the passage counts.
- Not correct. FALSE needs something in the passage that contradicts the statement, but sand and heating temperatures are never discussed at all.
- Correct. Sand and temperature are not mentioned, so the statement cannot be checked against the passage.
요령: Never use your own knowledge. A statement that is true in the real world is still NOT GIVEN if the passage does not say it.
