IELTS Reading True / False / Not Given の解き方と練習問題

True / False / Not Given は、それぞれの文が本文に書かれた事実と合っているかを問う形式です。失点の多くは False と Not Given の取り違えから生まれます。解き方の手順、避けたい落とし穴、そして試せる 1 問を紹介します。

それぞれの文が本文の情報と合うか（True）、矛盾するか（False）、本文に書かれていないか（Not Given）を判断します。落とし穴は Not Given です。本文に書かれていなければ、いかにもありそうな内容でも答えは Not Given になります。

解き方

  1. まず設問の文を読み、中心となる内容と、all・only・always・first・most のような範囲を限定する語に印を付けます。
  2. 本文の中から同じ内容を扱っている部分を探します。設問の文は本文の順に並んでいます。
  3. 単語ではなく意味で比べます。本文はたいてい設問の文を言い換えています。
  4. 本文が同じことを述べていれば TRUE、反対のことを述べていれば FALSE、どちらとも言っていなければ NOT GIVEN を選びます。

よくある間違い

  • 本文がその点に触れていないだけなのに FALSE を選んでしまう。FALSE にははっきりした矛盾が必要です。
  • 自分の知識で答えてしまう。現実には正しい内容でも、判断の根拠になるのは本文の記述だけです。
  • usually と always、some と most のように、主張を変える 1 語を見落とす。

The Glassmakers of Vellin The village of Vellin has a glassmaking tradition that dates back at least four hundred years. Its early glassmakers were attracted to the area by its forests, which supplied wood to fuel the furnaces, and by a nearby river, which was used to transport finished goods to the coast. By the nineteenth century, most of the surrounding forest had been cut down, and the workshops began burning coal brought in by canal. Today, only two workshops remain, both run by families who have worked with glass for generations. They no longer produce everyday items such as bottles and windows, which are made far more cheaply in large factories, but specialise in decorative pieces sold to collectors and tourists. Each piece is blown and shaped by hand, and a large bowl may take a full day to complete. A small museum in the village displays examples of Vellin glass from different periods, together with tools used by the early glassmakers.

Does the following statement agree with the information given in the passage? Choose TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN. Glass is made by heating sand to a very high temperature.

NOT GIVEN. The passage mentions furnaces and fuel but never says what glass is made from or how hot the furnace must be.

  1. Not correct. This may be true in real life, but the passage does not say it, and in IELTS only the passage counts.
  2. Not correct. FALSE needs something in the passage that contradicts the statement, but sand and heating temperatures are never discussed at all.
  3. Correct. Sand and temperature are not mentioned, so the statement cannot be checked against the passage.

コツ: Never use your own knowledge. A statement that is true in the real world is still NOT GIVEN if the passage does not say it.

False と Not Given の違いは何ですか。

False は、本文が設問の文と反対のことを述べている場合です。Not Given は、正しいとも誤りとも判断できる情報が本文にない場合です。

True / False / Not Given の問題は本文の順に並んでいますか。

はい。設問の文はたいてい本文の情報と同じ順に並んでいるので、答えの場所を探す手がかりになります。
